It’s never too early to get ready for Valentine’s day, it seems, even when it comes to malicious attacks. Recently, I came across a scam in Facebook that leverages the upcoming occasion.
The said attack begins with a post on affected users’ wall inviting other users to install a Valentine’s theme into their Facebook profile.
Once users click on this post, they are redirected to another page that urges them to install the said theme. Note that this attack only works on either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox browsers.

Clicking the Install button on the page will prompt the download of the malicious file, FacebookChrome.crx which Trend Micro detects as TROJ_FOOKBACE.A. When executed, TROJ_FOOKBACE.A executes a script that is capable of displaying ads from certain websites.

It also installs itself on the users’ browsers as an extension named Facebook Improvement |Facebook.com.
Once this malicious browser extension is installed, it will monitor the users’ browsing activities and redirect their page to a survey page asking them for their mobile number. Users who clicked on the post using Internet Explorer (IE) will be redirected to the same survey, without them being asked to download anything.
Upon further analysis, we discovered that the attack is much more effective if the users are employing either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. It resembles a legitimate extension download, thus requiring less user interaction than in the case where Internet Explorer is used (in which case the user is redirected to surveys).
With the focus of the attack mainly built around the concept of pretending to be a valid Chrome extension, we can reasonably conclude that Chrome users are the main target of this particular attack, with the IE redirection as more of an afterthought. But while there may be browser activity monitoring involved, TROJ_FOOKBACE.A does not seem to have any information theft techniques. It fits the criteria of a clickjacking attack more, where it automatically ‘likes’ several Facebook pages as well as automatically posts a message on the affected user’s wall.
The fact that the attack itself is focused on Chrome and Firefox may mean that cybercriminals are targeting extension-compatible browsers, as well as going after more popular browser choices. This is not the first attack of its kind, but considering that extension-capable browsers are coming to the forefront now, it serves as a warning to all of us that this may be a continuing a trend that the malicious entities of the Internet are going to follow in the foreseeable future.
Trend Micro protects users from this attack via Trend Micro Smart Protection Network that detects the malicious file and blocks all related malicious URLs.

Continuing Kaspersky Lab’s winning streak of top marks in independent evaluations of its security products, in December 2011 Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 was awarded the highest grade possible in comparative testing of security solutions for Android-based mobile phones by the independent research organization PC Security Labs (PCSL). Kaspersky Lab’s mobile solution earned five stars, together with just two other developers’ solutions out of a total of 20.
PCSL — whose motto, commendably, is “Scientific, Precise, Independent” — is the only test lab in China to have joined the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (the international non-profit association that “addresses the global need for improvement in the objectivity, quality and relevance of anti-malware testing methodologies”), and which has since earned itself worldwide recognition in the security industry. Having originally established itself based on its efficient antivirus test system used by over 30 security vendors, the lab has recently complemented its testing line-up with its Mobility Security Product Test and Certificate for the Android Platform.
A mobile phone loaded with 251 malicious programs and 50 popular regular applications (to test for false positives) was used as the basis for the testing. The antivirus signature databases of the mobile security solutions were frozen on December 16, 2011, and the testing took place in the days shortly afterwards.
As with the overall score, Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 was among the top-three rated solutions on detection rate. This is a particularly impressive result when one considers that some of the samples were very China-specific, which ran in favor of some competing solutions written in China and aimed specifically at the Chinese market. As to false positives, Kaspersky Mobile Security 9 returned none – the perfect score.

The Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 consumer product and the Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows corporate solution have both beaten all competing products in two separate independent tests conducted by the reputable testing institution AV-Test.org at the end of December 2011. In the testing of home user products Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 earned the highest score of 17 points (with 13.2 being the average) to become the all-out leader among 23 security solutions. In the evaluation of corporate security solutions Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows got the highest score of 17.5 points out of a possible 18, also making it the winner among the eight tested solutions from leading vendors.
AV-Test.org’s testing of security software consisted of several trials, including those for the effectiveness of malware detection and removal, the number of false positive detections, and resource usage. Kaspersky Internet Security achieved 100% results in detection of zero-day and widespread malware, and also effectively detected and removed all active components of malicious programs on an already infected PC. AV-Test.org also recorded no false positive detections by Kaspersky Internet Security when checked against a collection of more than 480 000 clean files. Other products incorrectly identified as malicious an average of 15 legitimate files.
Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows, the corporate security solution for Windows-based desktops, also achieved 100% results in both detection of widespread and new malware and in removal of active components of malicious programs. The test for false positive detections saw Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows return the perfect result — zero — while other products flagged three clean objects as malicious on average.
